Medical Science Liaisons and Unsolicited Request for Medical Information

Medical Information Requests

Bausch + Lomb receives various inquiries about its products from multiple sources such as healthcare professionals (HCPs), consumers, and colleagues. Common topics include:

  • On-label and Off-Label uses of Bausch + Lomb products
  • Drug interactions
  • Investigational drugs
  • Information about Bausch + Lomb
  • Other general questions

Only designated Medical Information personnel are authorized to respond to these requests. They are tasked with providing truthful, balanced, and accurate information about Bausch + Lomb products to ensure clarity and reliability.

Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs)

Medical Science Liaisons are medical and scientific experts who act as a resource for both internal Bausch + Lomb teams and the external medical community. Their role is to share accurate, credible, and balanced scientific data concerning the use of Bausch + Lomb products, aiming to improve patient care and treatment outcomes.

Independence from Commercial Influence

The MSL team operates independently and must not be directed or influenced by any commercial functions within Bausch + Lomb. MSLs are field-based professionals reporting to the Chief Medical Office, and their work is aligned with and supported by the objectives of the Medical Affairs program.

Appropriate MSL Activities

MSLs engage in scientific discussions with HCPs regarding disease states connected to Bausch + Lomb’s approved products, on-label product uses, and Unsolicited Off-Label information requests. They must follow established procedures in all interactions with both internal and external stakeholders. For detailed guidance, please refer to the MSL-specific operational guidelines.

Handling Unsolicited Off-Label Information Requests

If a commercial colleague receives a question about off-label use of a Bausch + Lomb product, they must adhere to the policy outlined in the Promotional Activities section of this guide. The inquiry should be redirected to the Medical Information Department (MI) or submitted via the appropriate Medical Inquiry system.

Sales and marketing colleagues are not permitted to request details about any scientific discussions the MSL may have with HCPs regarding unsolicited requests. MSLs are also prohibited from sharing such information with commercial teams.

A commercial colleague and an MSL should not participate in joint calls with HCPs. Brief introductory meetings with an HCP where either the MSL or sales colleague have not met the HCP in question are permissible. After a brief introduction, parties not involved in the meeting with the HCP should excuse themselves before any discussion begins.

Commercial Colleagues’ Interactions with MSLs

Direct contact between sales and marketing colleagues and the Medical Science Liaison (MSL) team should be kept to a minimum. While high-level discussions about educational needs may be appropriate in certain situations, commercial colleagues are not allowed to direct MSL activities, nor can MSLs provide direction to commercial team members.

MSLs may deliver appropriate product training and educational sessions to commercial personnel. For details on the types of training MSLs can provide, please refer to the official MSL guidance documentation.

Sales and MSL teams should maintain separate call lists, and sharing or exchanging these lists is prohibited.

Because Speaker Programs are promotional events, MSLs are generally not permitted to attend, even as silent observers, unless there is a specific, pre-approved need authorized by the Compliance Department. For example, Medical colleagues may attend these programs discreetly to assess the speaker but must do so in a silent, observational role.
